During a severe winter cold snap in Cincinnati, the public library becomes a place of refuge for the city’s homeless. What begins as an act of civil disobedience turns into a stand-off with police.   Movie run time is 120 Minutes.

Celebrate National Library Week by joining us for a showing of The Public, starring, written, and directed by Emilio Estevez, and also starring Christian Slater and Alec Baldwin. Library staff will facilitate discussions before and after the movie in order to provide context and information about homelessness on Long Island and the changing roles of libraries in the community. Representatives from the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, the Helping Hand Rescue Mission, and the Family Service League will join us to provide background and information on resources available for assisting the homeless.

Long Island libraries are adding resources to assist community members faced with various social issues through programs such as Stony Brook’s Social Work Intern program and HeLP, Stony Brook’s Healthy Libraries Program. Huntington Public Library is one of four in Suffolk County to pilot these new initiatives. Please bring a donation of food, socks, or personal hygiene items that we will share with the Helping Hand Rescue Mission and other local shelters.
